Visual contact
A shopper makes visual contact with a bay when they slow down below 45 cm/s in front of it, the speed at which products can be looked at.
Why speed
Shoppermotion does not use cameras, so it cannot see where people look. It measures something more robust: speed. Walking at normal pace (above 45 cm/s), shoppers scan the aisle. Below that threshold they are reading the shelf. Below 25 cm/s they have stopped to engage.
Where it is used
Visual contact is the second step of the physical funnel (traffic, visual contact, engaged, buyer) and the basis of the Views metric for in-store screens.
