Category analytics

Category analytics: see why every category sells, or doesn't.

Sales tell you what sold. Shoppermotion shows how many shoppers reached each category, stopped, engaged and bought, so you know where to act.

In short

Category analytics measures how shoppers behave in each category: traffic, visual contact, engagement and conversion, matched to receipts. Shoppermotion gets it from Bluetooth tags on trolleys and baskets, with no cameras, and benchmarks every category across stores.

What you can do

Six questions sales data can't answer on its own.

What sales can't show

Few visitors, or visitors who don't buy?

A category can under-sell because shoppers never reach it, pass without looking, or look and leave. Sales alone can't tell these apart.

  • Penetration and dwell per category
  • Visual contact and engagement
  • Missed opportunities: engaged, no purchase

Category Pulse

Every category on a traffic × conversion matrix.

See which categories to protect, which to fix and where traffic leaks before the till, then drill into the funnel of any one.

  • Traffic, visual contact, engaged, buyers
  • Speed thresholds: 45 and 25 cm/s
  • Conversion from matched receipts

Category benchmarks

Compare each category with the chain.

Benchmark every category against similar stores by region, format or type, and against itself over time.

  • Above or below the chain average
  • Store vs store, format vs format
  • Trends by week and season

Mapping and adjacencies

Place categories where trips already go.

See which categories shoppers visit together and in what order, to plan adjacencies and secondary placements.

  • Category pairs from real trips
  • Visit order and main directions
  • Best spots for secondary placements

Test before rollout

Test a relayout in a few stores first.

Compare a new layout or planogram with control stores over the same weeks, on behaviour and sales, before changing the chain.

  • Test store vs control store
  • Winner decided by conversion
  • Statistical confidence on every result

Promotions, displays and media

What each display adds to its category.

Measure end caps, displays and screens by the traffic they pull into the category and, with ticket matching, the sales they add.

  • Traffic pulled into the category
  • Engagement before and after
  • Sales lift from matched receipts

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is category analytics?

The analysis of how each product category performs. With in-store data it covers not only sales but how many shoppers reached the category, looked, engaged and bought.

How is it different from category management?

Category management is the process of running categories as business units. Category analytics is the data behind those decisions; in-store behaviour adds what sales data cannot show.

Which metrics are measured per category?

Traffic and penetration, dwell time, visual contact, engagement, conversion and missed opportunities, per category, bay and store.

How are behaviour and sales linked?

Each tagged trip is matched with its own receipt at the till, so conversion is measured, not estimated. Ticket matching is part of the Insights plan.

What is Category Pulse?

A dashboard that places every category on a traffic × conversion matrix, to see which ones to protect, which to fix and where shoppers leave without buying.

Can I compare categories across stores?

Yes. Category benchmarks compare each category with similar stores by region, format or type, and with its own history.

Is it for retailers or for brands?

Both. Retailers use it for space, layout and assortment decisions; CPG brands use it to understand their category in store and to support category reviews.

Does it use shoppers' personal data?

No. Shoppermotion tracks shopping tools, not people, so every trip is anonymous by design. Data is encrypted and processed in line with GDPR.

How long does deployment take?

Our operations team has reduced deployment and onboarding to a few hours. We only need your anchor positions and layouts to start, and location data is transmitted over standard TLS encryption.
