Breakfast cereals · gondola
The eye-level band (about 120–160 cm from the floor) is what shoppers see first. Many teams put the products they most want found there.

How to make a planogram in 5 steps
The same order a category team follows on paper, with the arithmetic done for you.
- 1
Measure the bay
Measure the width and height of each bay and the shelf depth. Enter them under Your shelf, in centimetres or inches.
- 2
Set the shelves
Choose how many shelves the bay has and the clear height between them. The tool warns you when they don't fit in the bay.
- 3
List products with width and facings
Add each product with its width, height and number of facings, or import the whole list from the CSV template.
- 4
Arrange by your rule
Drag products onto the shelves following your rule: brand blocking, price tiers, best sellers at eye level. The fill bar shows the space left on each shelf.
- 5
Export the PDF and brief the store
Download the PDF with the drawing to scale, the product list by shelf and, if you want, a compliance checklist. Print it or send it to the store.

Fundamentals
What is a planogram?
A planogram is a drawing of a shelf, drawn to scale, that shows which products go where and how many facings each one gets. Retailers and brands use it so every store sets the shelf the same way, and so a category can be planned on paper before anyone moves stock.
A good planogram starts from the real fixture (bay width, shelf heights, depth) and from a rule: group by brand or by need, put best sellers at eye level, keep heavy and large packs low.
Merchandising layouts
Types of planograms
- 01
Horizontal and vertical blocking
Products from one group run along a shelf, or in a column from top to bottom.
- 03
Fridge and cooler
Doors and shelves sized for chilled drinks and dairy. There is a cooler template above.
From paper to reality
Planogram compliance: drawn is not the same as done
A planogram on paper only helps when the shelf in store matches it. Gaps, products in the wrong spot and the wrong number of facings all creep in after a reset. Teams check it with store visits and checklists, and the PDF from this tool can include a checklist page.
Some retailers check compliance with photo recognition of the shelf, the approach of vendors such as Trax (Shoppermotion vs Trax). Compliance tells you whether the plan is on the shelf. It doesn't tell you whether it sells.

Store checklist or shelf photo: does the bay match the plan?
Traffic, engagement, dwell and receipt-matched conversion.
Shelf analytics
Does your planogram sell? Measure it
With Shoppermotion, every trolley and basket is followed anonymously from the entrance to the till and matched to its receipt. So for each planogram you see the traffic in front of the shelf, engagement and dwell, and how many of those trips bought from it, and how each number changes after a reset.
Comparison
Free planogram maker vs planogram software
This free planogram software covers a lot, but not everything. An honest guide to when it is enough.
When this tool is enough
- One store or a few
- A handful of bays per planogram
- A one-off reset, a new display or a supplier proposal
- You want a clean PDF for the store team today
When you need full planogram software for retail stores
- Hundreds of stores and store clusters
- Planograms generated automatically from sales and space data
- Product images, a shared product catalogue and approval workflows
- That is the job of space-planning suites used by large retailers
FAQ
Planogram maker questions
Is this planogram maker really free? Do I need an account?
Yes, it's free planogram software with no account and no signup. Everything runs in your browser and the planogram is saved there. The optional email form only asks for your address if you want us to send you a copy.
Can I download my planogram as a PDF?
Yes. The PDF has the drawing to scale on the first page and the product list by shelf on the next, with facings and widths. You can add a compliance checklist page, pick A4 or Letter, and also export a PNG image or a CSV.
Is there a planogram template for Excel?
Yes. Download the CSV planogram template from the Your products panel, open it in Excel or Google Sheets, add one row per product with its width, height and facings, then import it. The tool also opens six ready-made planogram templates.
How do I calculate facings?
Facings are how many units of a product face the shopper side by side. Multiply the product width by its facings to get the shelf space it takes. The tool does it for you and shows the fill of each shelf, so you can trade facings between products until the shelf fits.
What's the difference between a planogram and a store layout?
A store layout is the floor plan: where aisles, categories and fixtures sit in the store. A planogram zooms into one fixture and shows which products go on each shelf. Layout decides where shoppers walk; the planogram decides what they see when they stop.
Where is my planogram saved?
In your browser's local storage, on your device. Nothing is uploaded. To keep a copy or move it to another computer, use Save file to download a .json and open it later with Open file.
Can I make a planogram for a fridge or cooler?
Yes. Choose Cooler / fridge door as the fixture type or start from the beverage cooler template, then set the door width, height and shelves. The same works for end caps, checkout units and wall bays.
Is this planogram software for retail stores with many locations?
It suits one store, a few bays or a one-off reset. For hundreds of stores, automatic planogram generation and approval workflows you need a full space-planning suite. Many teams draft here and use their main system for roll-out.
How do I know if my planogram is working?
Sales alone don't tell you, because they also move with price, promotions and traffic. Shoppermotion measures traffic in front of each shelf, engagement, dwell and shelf conversion from anonymous trolley and basket paths matched to the receipt. Book a demo to see it.
Your planogram is on the shelf. Is it selling?
