Real-time location system (RTLS)

A real-time location system (RTLS) continuously locates tagged assets or people inside buildings and streams their positions to software as they move.

A real-time location system is indoor GPS for things that move. It locates tagged assets, vehicles or people inside buildings, where satellite positioning does not work, and streams their coordinates to applications as they happen.

Every RTLS has four components: anchors that receive signals, tags on assets or wearables, a positioning engine that computes coordinates, and an open platform to use the data. Shoppermotion's RTLS uses Bluetooth 5.1 Angle of Arrival anchors installed on the ceiling, supports any AoA-compatible BLE 5.1 tag, and delivers positions through a REST API or MQTT feeds.

The same engine that tracks trolleys in supermarkets tracks tools, pallets, forklifts and workers in factories, warehouses, venues and hospitals. Typical applications include asset tracking, internal logistics and personnel management.

To get started, the AoA API demo sets up locators, gateways and beacons and returns real-time XY locations, and the free RTLS license gives a real-time map with 3 beacons. Starter kits are available through our partner Minew.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What are the components of an RTLS?

Anchors that receive signals, tags on assets or wearables, a positioning engine that computes coordinates, and an open platform (REST API, MQTT, dashboards) to use the data.

When should I use MQTT or the REST API?

Use MQTT for live maps, alerts and control systems. Use the REST API for history, reports and BI.
